( Update: Microsoft has changed the Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) package, as described in KB 894199. TechNet even has an admonition about running SP1 on Windows 7 systems that have most or all of the Language Packs installed. There appear to be open questions about errors 0x80004005 and 0xC000009A.

There's another error on installation, 0xC0000034, that hasn't been nailed down as yet it seems to be quite rare, though, and it (or an error just like it) also afflicts Windows Vista. The causes range from obscure Registry settings to a third-party utility to wayward antivirus products. TechNet has detailed instructions for coping with installation failures with these error codes: 0x800f0a12, 0x8004a029, 0x800f0a13 or 0x800f0826, 0x800f0904, and 0xC000022. The RSAT tools have been implicated in failed SP1 installations with error code 0x800f081f.

There have been a few - remarkably few - identified problems with the Service Pack and some additional unconfirmed reports that warrant your attention. If the distortion is still there, the problem is on the analog side.If you've been waiting to install Windows 7 SP1 on your users' machines or hesitating about installing SP1 on your own PC, you might want to wait a little bit longer. If the analog playback is clear, the distortion is on the computer/digital side of things. (Make sure you set the turntable to “line out” to use the turntable’s internal preamp.) If a different record doesn’t make a difference, connect the analog line-outputs to your stereo or to your TV, or with the right adapter cables you can connect the turntable directly to your computer speakers. If you haven’t done so already, try a different record. …So when there’s no gain control, these things are usually calibrated on the quiet-side so that you never clip the analog-to-digital inside the turntable when playing an especially-loud record.Īnd, low volume doesn’t cause distortion (if it did, you’d get distortion during quiet passages or during fade-outs). It wouldn’t be unusual to find a 6dB difference between records and the last thing you want is to a record that “tries” to go over 0dBFS… That’s a hard-digital limit and it you try to go over 0dB you’ll get clipping (distortion). Different records are recorded at different volumes and you may be playing a quiet record. That’s a little lower than you’d like, but -12dB peaks should be acceptable. Sadly I can’t get to -6, I can only get to -12 dB even with the input volume slider maxed out.
